Changes to UC Admission for the class of 2012

UC admission requirements are changing, effective with the class of 2012.  Students need to meet 3 minimum requirements:

1.  Complete A-G requirements (minimum, 15 courses) with at least 11 completed by the end of your junior year

2.  Earn a GPA of 3.0 or better in A-G courses, earning at least a C or better in all A-G coursework

3.  Take the SAT Reasoning or ACT with writing by December of your senior year. The SAT Subject Exams are no longer required, though they may be submitted and recommended for some majors.

Read the UC Admission requirements in detail.

Comprehensive Review

The UC selects applicants by using a process called Comprehensive Review. Campuses review all qualified applicants in the context of opportunities and challenges each has experienced, using a broad range of 14 academic and personal factors.

Calculate GPA

Students can use the GPA Calculator to see their CSU/UC GPA.  The GPA is calculated using only completed courses in 10th and 11th grades which satisfy the A-G Requirements.

Analytical Writing Placement Examination (AWPE)

ALL STUDENTS who will enter the University of California as freshmen must demonstrate their command of the English language by fulfilling the Entry Level Writing Requirement (formerly known as Subject A requirement).  For more information about the AWPE and to see how students can be EXEMPT from this exam, go to www.ucop.edu/sas/awpe.

UC Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)

The University of California Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is designed for students with exceptional academic ability and promise despite a low-income or educationally disadvantaged background. EOP is open to students who meet the University’s regular admission requirements. In addition, special assistance is available through EOP to students who do not meet the regular admission requirements, but who can demonstrate the ability and potential to succeed at the University (see Admission by Exception).

Students who are eligible for the UC EOP program are encouraged to apply on the UC Application.  Students should use the personal statement to discuss their interest in EOP and the reasons they are applying to the program.

Applying to a UC

UC applications are available online beginning October 1st; the UC application filing dates are November 1st - November 30th.

Current Juniors must take the SAT/ACT no later than December 2010

UC's and CSU's will not accept any SAT/ACT tests taken any later than December of your senior year.  Students planning to apply to UC schools must also take 2 SAT Subject Tests in 2 different disciplines (Class of 2011 only.)  Taking the SAT Reasoning and 2 SAT Subject Tests requires 2 separate testing dates, so plan ahead!

Application Fee Waivers

Students applying to UC or CSU do not need to fill out a fee waiver form.  They can do this directly on the application when it is completed on line.
