What's the Difference Between ACT and SAT?

Both the ACT and SAT Reasoning are accepted at colleges and universities across the nation.  For students who choose to take the ACT, UC reqiuires the Optional Writing portion of the test in addition to 2 SAT Subject Tests.  CSU does not require the Optional Writing portion of the ACT.

Seniors

Seniors who still need to take the SAT and/or ACT need to take the tests no later than December of their senior year.  UC's and CSU's will not accept any SAT/ACT tests taken any later than this date.  Students planning to apply to UC schools must also take 2 SAT Subject Tests in 2 different disciplines.  Taking the SAT Reasoning and 2 SAT Subject Tests requires 2 separate testing dates, so plan ahead!

**Beginning with the Class of 2012, students are no longer required to take 2 SAT Subject Exams for admission to UC. However, many competitive private colleges and universities require them; and, for some UC majors, they are highly recommended.

Fee Waivers

Students who are on the free/reduced lunch program take the SAT and ACT for free.

  • 2 SAT Reasoning Tests
  • 2 SAT Subject Tests (3 subject tests per exam day)
  • 2 ACT Tests

Students who qualify for testing fee waivers may also qualify to apply to colleges and universities for free.  This applies to UC's, CSU's, and some private/out of state colleges. Check the Directory of Colleges Cooperating with the SAT Fee-Waiver Service to see if a school offers a fee waiver to apply.  View more information on Fee Waivers.
